An extra day with our big girl

Stan and Kathleen got a big bonus today when Emily's regular daycare provider got sick. It took Kathleen just moments to jump out of bed, dress and drive away to pick up our little nineteen-month-old.

Rob Davenport, 30, the general manager of the Daily Journal in International Falls, happened to be our overnight guest. He's the father of a young girl so when we surprised him with Emily this morning he knew how to join the fun.

We got a photo of them together, but only had 10 seconds to do it. Emily is a good sport, but the bearded stranger was clearly no Santa Claus, so she departed his lap, politely but briskly.

She did have time to melt Grandpa's heart as he prepared for a noon meeting today, however. Grandpa was walking aimlessly around the house asking no one in particular, "where did I leave my shoes?" Quietly, Emily slipped away on her own to Stan's shoe shelves in the hallway and selected a pair of beatup black Nikes, and then returned to set them down by his feet.
Grandpa was so touched that he never did get around to finding the brown oxfords that match his brown sweater.
We are rethinking our two-months in Arizona.
