"Yes, I will be a good girl if you light the candles," four-year-old Emily promised us first.
Grandma had been getting ready to melt off and replace the old candles from the fireplace candelabra this morning. We're getting ready for a party. Emily had an idea. "Can we light them first?"
We hesitated because we've been to this rodeo before. But after she promised not to play with the fire and hot wax if we lighted them up, it became an educational moment:
"Once upon a time people didn't have any electric lights. All they had was candles to see by like this. Really?"
We turned off all the lights and just had the candle glow and the Christmas tree lights in the darkened basement. But it was still bright enough to draw a colorful candelabra. And enough light left over for Grandpa's camera.
