It's different here, but not so much

They held a "cross retrieval" at a local New Orleans parish today. A nun heaves a hand-carved cross into the bayou and young men dive in after it, wearing white garments, bringing it back. The breathless tv people seemed astounded that the youth would bravely swim out in 60 degree water. "Oh," a church official explained, "they have been prepared for this and they are only in the water for a couple of minutes and they wear long sleeves."
Seems odd, yes, but do they know anything about the many Polar Plunges for charity in Minneapolis where volunteers jump into a water hole cut in the lake ice?
Now that's odd.
