Hello Dave,
Here's a look at the kitchen hood I've been talking to Randy about. Kathleen and I have thought that a nice copper skin would be just the thing for this rather plain, yet functional, hood that we built in 10 years ago. We've finished the backsplash area finally. Got the grout done last week. Now we'd like to finish the hood before the end of the decade.
(JFK got NASA to put men on the moon in less than 10 years. We think we can do better.)
My good friend Randy is quite taken with your metal-working skills, boasting of the beefy, robust swinging gates you're manufacturing in his LA back yard. Says they'll swing with a finger-touch when they're done. We can't wait to give them a push next winter.
When we get there, I would like to consult with you on our range hood project. I realize copper has its disadvantages. It will change color and get all grungy over time. But we think that might be kind of nice, sort of blending its patina and character with the rouge finish on the cabinets. Kathleen's sister did it to great effect at their Shadow Falls home in St. Paul. We'd like to give it a try.
Structurally, I was thinking we could cut out three panels of thin copper sheets and then glue them to the six existing planes. We would trim them out by laying on a network of straps and angle irons at the edges and corners. These would feature lines of smashed rivet heads, giving it a handmade, rustic look and creating a focal point.
Will you noodle this with Randy?
And tell him we're waiting for our first look at your new gate.
Stan
